Spring, or early summer is finally here in Sweden. So I’ve started with more macro photography, mostly flowers and some insects. But it’s weird, I noted that I’ve almost not seen any butterflies this year. Perhaps it’s because the spring is so late, or maybe it’s something far worse behind their absence… Anyway, here is one of the macro pictures from this spring, but it’s not of flowers or bugs.

A while back I read about a photographer who took really nice pictures of oil in water (I can’t recall her name though), and I wanted to try it since I read the article. So, here’s one of the pictures from my first try… Since it was rather fun to shoot, there might be more of this in the future. Hope you like my attempt at this.

It’s been a while since I had inspiration to go out and take some pictures, partly due to finishing university and partly because the weather has been rather crap. However, today the weather was good and we went to visit some friends.

These old cart wheels decorate one of the walls on their old barn house, and it was a good picture to try to capture and also to try to get the old feeling to be present in the photo too.

Today was another good day, sun was shining and it wasn’t too cold either. I’m still exploring what works as black and white photographs, and with risk of repeating myself I once read that when it comes to black and white, it’s about shapes and lines. So, I’m trying a bit more of that. I’m hoping that in time, I’ll develop some kind of eye for what is a good b & w picture.

A little while ago, I was listening to a man who been a photographer most of his life. He said that when it comes to shooting good pictures it’s better to learn how the light interacts with one certain place, rather than trying to find great pictures by moving around a lot. Those were probably not his exact words, but that’s what I made from what he said. And with that in mind, I’ve been going back to one of my favourite places to photograph a few times this week.

Today I found a new place where the sun gives interesting light and contrast as it sets… and this image is one of the ones that I got from that discovery. There are interesting things hiding in the ice, sometimes.

Today I got some “new” lenses for the first time in a very long time. I bought an analog Nikon F-801, possibly to shoot some black and white film at some point. With the F-801 I also got a Nikkor 35-70mm, and a Sigma 75-300mm. I know the lenses might not be the most expensive, but as a student I can’t spend too much money on things yet.

Anyway, both lenses work real well for what I need, and it’s nice with some more zoom on the 300mm too. Since the weather was really nice today, cold but good light, I went out to try them. I got out a bit late, and the sun was setting quite fast… but that just offers more interesting light. And I found these animal tracks in the snow leading up to a tiny stream of water, and well, the light helped the picture quite a bit.

I’ve had a lot of things going on lately so little time for for photography. But, today the weather was decent enough to go out for a while. I will continue working on my black and white skills, and today I decided to take some macro shots of snow and ice.

It always amazes me how many different things you can actually find when you start with macro. It really opens up an entire world of details, and it turns out it’s quite good for shooting black and white pictures – snow crystals are very cool things too.

Since the weather today doesn’t really allow for any outdoor photography, today was a day for trying things indoors. Yesterday I realized that I’ve missed black and white photography, so I tried some more today… and will probably try to shoot more B&W photography in general for a while.

As it’s still really dark in Sweden, some tea candles had to pose for me today. Also, tried some new way of editing the photos in Gimp – which is actually a really good program. Gimp grows on you, the more you use it… wrong as that sounds.

I’ve been trying some more night photography lately, maybe because it’s still very dark days here in Sweden. At the same time, I figure I could practice my black and white photography, since some of the night photography shots doesn’t really offer that much color. Of course, that depends on what you aim your camera at.

When we were out tonight, my wife made a remark that I’m in a rather dark period of my life now. I suppose there’s a lot of truth to that, I just didn’t occur to me before.

Walking to the car yesterday, I found this lonely, forgotten rose laying on the ground. The light snowfall from the night had added some powder on it.

I’m not normally a fan of very manipulated photography, but sometimes it can be justified I believe. Here I wanted to go for the feeling I got when I saw the rose in the snow. What first caught my eye was the red in the white, and then the sensation of lonelyness, or the feeling of being forgotten. Hopefully this image conveys that in some way.

It’s a rare thing that I manage to get more than one picture that I’m happy with during one session, but it does happen. The cold walk the other day was one of those rare occasion. I really enjoy how the sun gives this rather cold image a sense of warmth, and the hole in the ice enhances the feeling somehow.

The bad summer last year didn’t seem to lead to a mild winter. It’s time for some newer photos here, and this image is from the other day. It was a crisp day, cold as heck, but we took a walk around to try to get some pictures before the last sunlight vanished.
